Matthew 9:35
We have been talking about the Harvest. For the farmer, harvest time is when the crops are reaped from his land. The vegetables or the fruits are ripe and ready to be harvested and brought into the barns or the storehouses where they are prepared for the market.
In the Gospels, when Jesus speaks of the harvest, He is speaking of people. Last week, our key scripture talked about the fields being ripe unto harvest. Jesus was saying there are people in the world that are in that in-between place. They are waiting for someone to come and save them. They are ripe and ready to be brought into the storehouse.
This week's key verse is from the 9th chapter of the gospel according to Matthew.
Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, ''The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.''
So, not only are the fields ripe unto harvest, Jesus said, the harvest is PLENTIFUL (full of plenty, large), but the laborers are few (small in number). In other words, there are not enough workers to bring in all of the harvest in a timely fashion so none of the crops are lost.
The true heart of this passage of scripture is the compassion of Jesus.
THE FATHER'S HEART REVEALED
Jesus came to reveal the heart of the Father to us. Jesus said, ''If you've seen Me, you've seen the Father.'' Throughout the Old Testament, the Father was revealed through many different names. Look at how God revealed Himself in the 34th chapter of the book of Exodus:
