Intro/Attention

I'm preaching selected Psalms every Sunday morning until the end of July. It's a series I've called, Summer Psalms. Today, I want you to turn to Psalm 39 and I want us to think about Measuring Our Lives By God's Standard. Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12, ''Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.'' Here, David echoes that same sentiment and desire. READ TEXT

*We all have things we don't like. Maybe our preferences are different than someone else's. One lady took her son to a doctor because of an ear infection. She was impressed with how well the doctor connected with her son. He asked the little boy, ''Is there anything you are allergic to?'' The little boy nodded and whispered something in the doctor's ear. Smiling, the doctor nodded and said he would send the prescription to the pharmacy. When the mother picked it up, the pharmacist remarked on the unusual allergy her son must have. When he saw her puzzled expression, he showed her the label on the bottle. The doctor's instructions read; ''Do not take with broccoli.''*

This morning, we're talking about a topic that might not be your favorite, but believe me; it's good for you! We need to learn how to ''number our days.'' We need to learn how to count our days so we can make our days count. In other words, we need to measure our lives by God's standard. Not the standard of the worldly success, or the standard of societal acceptance, or the standard of your friends and family. We need to measure our lives according to God's standard.

*In Washington D.C. there is a building called the ''National Institute of Standards and Technology.'' This facility is responsible for storing perfect samples of weights and measurements.
