This world has a lot of opinions about who Jesus is. Some people say He was a good teacher. Some people say He was a spiritual leader. Others say He was a good example. But the Bible teaches that He is the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

Jesus asked His most faithful followers a question: ''Who do you say that I am?'' And one of His followers named Peter said, ''You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.'' It's important for us to understand what others say about Jesus. But it's infinitely more vital for us to know what Jesus said about Himself.

That's why we're studying the seven ''I am'' statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John. This phrase, ''I am'' is very significant biblically. When God appeared to Moses in the book of Exodus He appeared in a burning bush and commanded Moses to deliver His people from Egyptian slavery. READ Exodus 3:14-15

It's no wonder that the religious leaders wanted to kill Jesus when he said, ''Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am!'' John 8:58 (ON SCREEN) Clearly, they recognized that Jesus was claiming to be God. And every one of these seven ''I am'' statements from Jesus Christ are a claim to deity. Jesus opened His sermon with a familiar illustration (John 10:1-6), one that every listener would understand. The sheepfold was usually an enclosure made of rocks, with an opening for the door. The shepherd (or a porter) would guard the flock, or flocks, at night by lying across the opening. It was not unusual for several flocks to be sheltered together in the same fold. In the morning, the shepherds would come, call their sheep, and assemble their own flocks. Each sheep recognized his own master's voice.
