HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN COSMIC MAP

Jesus Christ said, "The lamp of the body is the eye. If
therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But
if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If
therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that
darkness!" (Matthew 6:22, 23).

Jesus had a matchless way of taking the simplest of every
day experiences and common sense observations and illustrating
the most profound spiritual truths. In talking about developing our
own spiritual life He made such an application.

Modern theologians might say He was talking about how to
develop your own world view. I want to refer to the same principle
by using an expression of the Yale theologian G. Lindbeck as used
in his book entitled, The Nature of Doctrine. Though theologically I
have little in common with him, I like his term "Our Cosmic Map."
By the term "cosmic map" he is referring to the things that influence
our path in life.

In referring to our cosmic map Jesus used the human eye to
help our understanding. He called attention to the fact the eye is
the lamp of the body admitting light. If the eye is good the light
admitted is good. If the eye is bad the light admitted is bad.

Therefore, if the eye is "good," that is, "single," not having an
astigmatism the vision is good. If the eye is not good it produces a
blurred vision.

If the window is clear and clean the effect is good, but if it is
distorted or dirty the light is hindered.

Jesus is saying the light that gets into a person's heart
depends upon the spiritual state of that person. What are the
sources of light entering your life. These sources are being
computed by your mind to develop your cosmic map, your
philosophy of life.
