Philippians 2:1-11
Outline: A Hymn in Three (3) Verses
Verse 1: Humiliation (2:5-8)
Verse 2: Exaltation (2:9-11)
Verse 3: Invitation - ''Jesus Christ is Lord''
Introduction: Have you seen your doctor lately? Even if your healthy, it's a good idea to get checked up every now and then. We may fear going to the doctor because he or she might find something wrong with us. And there probably is even if it's not that serious! The Philippian church was by most standards a healthy church. It was a good church, a giving church, a growing church. But no church is perfect because it is made up of imperfect human beings. There was some self-seeking and disunity in the fellowship. Paul actually names two individuals (Euodia and Syntyche) in chapter 4:2 who were at the flashpoint of this conflict. So as healthy and good as the church was, there was always some room for improvement, to become more like Christ. And that is why Paul takes these verses in chapter two to plead for the Philippians to develop more and more the mind of Christ. ''In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus'' (2:5). Or as the ESV states, ''Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.''
The ESV translation highlights the truth that this ''mindset'' is only possible ''in Christ.'' Trying to imitate Christ minus a relationship with him leads to burdensome religion and frustration. The only way to true ''Christlikeness'' is by daily dying to self and becoming alive in Christ. Paul expresses this truth in Galatians 2:20. ''I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.''
''Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.'' Such a simple statement, but consider how that would revolutionize relationships in every area of your lives. Having trouble in ...
