John 10:27
We've been learning that there are three vitally important truths that should mark our lives as Christians:
1. We must know who Jesus is.
2. We must know who we are in Jesus.
3. We must know what Jesus is saying to us.
John 10:27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
John 10:4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
Sometimes we don't hear the voice of the Lord so well. There are distractions and hindrances to us hearing His voice clearly.
1. LACK OF SOLITUDE WITH GOD
If we never take the time to pray, if we never get away from the busyness of life to be with Jesus, we will not increase our capacity to hear the voice of God. Deliberate prayer discipline aligns our hearts with the Spirit of God and takes us into the secret place where the Father is. When we are in that place, we can hear what He is saying to us.
Even Jesus took time to pray and was able to say: John 8:26 ''I have much to say in judgment of you. But he who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him I tell the world.'' 27 They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father. 28 So Jesus said, ''When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. (NIV)
If Jesus needed time to pray and listen, why do we make it optional for us? Jesus modeled to us how to slip away from the rat race of demands on your time so you can hear God's voice.
Matthew 14:23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.
Mark 1:35 In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.
