Matthew 1:18-25
This week as we go the movies, we will take a look at what may arguably be the greatest classic movie of all time, Frank Capra's memorable, ''It's a Wonderful Life,'' starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. The story is about a man named George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart who had ambitious plans for life. He wanted to become an architect and travel the world and have all kinds of adventures. Instead, he became trapped in a humdrum ordinary life in a small town named Bedford Falls. Instead of going off to college, he takes over the building and loan business after his father dies. He makes small loans to mostly poor, working people which puts him in competition against Mr. Potter who refused to make such loans so that people would live in his overpriced slum rental homes.
A crisis happens when George's uncle Billy loses an important bank deposit while Billy taunts Mr. Potter. When the money cannot be found, George faces the closing of his building and loan and the possibility of going to jail. In a state of panic, he wrecks his car and then contemplates suicide. This is where Clarence, an angel enters and shows George just how much his life has meant to his community. George tells Clarence that he wishes he had never been born. Clarence decides to grant George his wish and he shows him what life would look like if he had never been born. In the alternate reality, Bedford Falls is now called Pottersville, a dark, dreary and sleazy place. The building and loan had closed down because George was never there to take over after his father's passing. He discovers his brother, Harry's grave, who died because George was not there to save him from drowning. His mother and wife do not recognize him because he had never been.
Only after seeing the world without his ever being born can George fully appreciate the truly wonderful life he had all along. So he begs God for ...
