Romans 11
ILLUS. - Are you a planner OR are you a spontaneous, fly by the seat of your pants kind of person? - Raise your hand if you are a PLANNER? - Now, who's our spontaneous go with the flow people? - Guess what God is. - HE'S A PLANNER. I know that makes the planners in the room happy to hear. - BTW as image bearers, we are planners to, some more than others, but we all make plans. - The difference in us and God... His plans are perfect and never fail. Our plans can be flawed... and our plans FAIL at times.- I planned to make Gumbo Friday night. I did but I also ended up making a trip to Lowe's to try and fix a kitchen sink... not in the plans.
You planned the perfect vacation, but it rained. - Things you can't control.
You planned the best date, and forgot your wallet. - Our own mistakes.
But God's plans... they don't fail. - In Romans 9-11 Paul has been showing us how God has not failed, and His promises have not failed. Today Paul will answer a question about God rejecting His people, by showing that God has a plan. It's a unfailing plan. And that plan includes having a people to call His own... a diverse people.
Rom. 11:17, 11-12- I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? 3 ''Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life.'' 4 But what is God's reply to him? ''I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.'' 5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
7 What then? Israel failed ...
