John Calvin, for the Glory of God (1 of 4)
Series: Profiles of the Protestant Reformation
Joe Alain
Romans 1:21-23; 2 Timothy 3:15-17
Series: Profiles of the Protestant Reformation. This is the first (1) in a series of four (4) messages that were delivered on the four Sundays leading up to and culminating in Reformation Sunday.
Sources: Christianity through the Centuries, Earl Cairns; Theology of the Reformers, Timothy George; A Treasury of Great Preaching, Clyde E. Fant, Jr. and William Pinson, Jr.; Turning Points, Mark Noll.
Note: This message followed the Sunday after the horrendous shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 persons and injured scores of others. As a result, I took the opportunity to explore our biblical understanding of depravity and sin in the context of an exploration of John Calvin and his teaching. Thus, the first part of the sermon dealt with putting the week's events in context.
''Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth'' Psalm 124:8. This verse, used later in the sermon was cited in all of John Calvin's services in Geneva.
The New ''Abnormal'' Normal
It's happened again, another murdering rampage has taken place on American Soil, Las Vegas, Nevada becoming the newest killing field joining the likes of Orlando, Newtown Connecticut, Virginia Tech, just to name only a few of the senseless mass murders since 2007. Helpless concert goers were gunned down from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel. The death toll of 58 persons with over 489 injured is almost unimaginable and our hearts break for these families forever changed in a moment of madness. A prophecy about Babylon in Isaiah 21 offered these words to me the other day and they describe how we might feel at the carnage of this tragedy. Isaiah wrote, ''I am staggered by what I hear, I am bewildered by what I see, my heart falters, fear makes me tremble'' (Isaiah 21:3-4). We wonder, is this the new ''abnormal'' normal?
