What follows is a narrative sermon that explores the account of the raising of Lazarus through exposition and application throughout. You do not have to wait for heaven to experience new life, new life is now in Jesus Christ who has conquered death and the grave. Easter comes early to those who put their trust in him.

Recently, we watched a significant portion of the Cathedral of Notre Dame burn. Video of the raging fire was everywhere in the media. One picture that was particularly striking was of the interior of the main sanctuary after the fire had been extinguished. With the sunlight coming through, the air still filled with smoke, the cross shone through. It stood as a powerful symbol of hope rising up from the ashes. There is an amazing story of such hope in John chapter 11, “When Easter Came Early” to a man named Lazarus and his two sisters, Martha and Mary.

Situation – A death in the family
Lazarus was deathly sick (11:1), and Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus about his dire state. Jesus was close to Lazarus and his sisters so the natural expectation would have been that Jesus would come as soon as possible. But instead, Jesus waited and Lazarus died and was buried.

Stress – Where is God when I need him?
Martha and Mary were devastated. We can imagine what they were thinking. “Why did Jesus not come?” They were hurt, they didn’t understand, they more than likely were angry. We too may feel, “Where is God when I need him the most?” We might think that that God has let us down. But God’s delay is not denial and death is not final! Even though Martha and Mary didn’t understand, Jesus had his reasons for not going immediately to see Lazarus (11:4). And Jesus would indeed be glorified (11:45)!
