This sermon was preached on the occasion of recognizing our graduates during a Sunday morning worship service.
6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. Colossians 2:6-8, NIV
To earn your diploma or degree is a very satisfying accomplishment. Enjoy this moment, celebrate it, soak it in, you are to be congratulated. But as you well know, receiving the diploma or degree is not the end of your journey, it is just the beginning. Some of you will go on for further education, some will continue working in your vocation, and others will enter the workforce. We never stand still for too long. It's that way in the Christian life too. We either go forward or gradually slip backward. The Christian who is not making forward progress will lose their way and is open to falling away from the faith. Here in Colossians 2 is a warning and an appeal to remain true to Christ as Lord.
The Colossians had received Christ as the Anointed of God (''Christ''), as the historic Savior (''Jesus'') and as the sovereign (''Lord''). Now Paul wants them to ''continue to live'' in the same way. The teaching that they were taught and had committed to in the beginning, they are to affirm and continue in it. And that is my challenge to you and all of us today, ''Continue to live your lives in Him.'' As we do that, we graduate by degree. We are as Paul said, ''being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit'' (2 Cor. 3:18). But there are spiritual dangers alo ...
