Genesis 25:21-26
William Shakespeare's play, As You Like It, written in 1599 is the story about Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
In the play Shakespeare wrote that now famous line, ''All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and entrances and one man in his time plays many parts.''
Jacob was a man who played many different roles in his life. He was a son, father of 12 sons who became the 12 tribes of Israel and also a grandfather. He was a conman, deceiver and liar. He was a hard worker and provider for his large family. He lived in fear of retaliation by his brother for his deception.
God sovereignly chose Jacob to serve his plan for our salvation. Theodore Epp - ''Election is the sovereign act of God whereby certain persons are chosen for distinctive services for him. It primarily involves service, not salvation.''
God choses and he uses people to accomplish his purposes. In the OT it was to develop the nation of Israel which would one day bring the promised Messiah into the world.
PRAYER ANSWERED :21 Isaac prayed because for 20 years they had not had a child. They were married when he was 40 (:20) and he was now 60 (:26).
Granted (KJB intreated) - the Hebrew word for prayer is used two times in this verse. God graciously answered his prayer.
Conceived - God is the author and giver of life. Genesis 30:1-2 When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, She envied her sister (who had four sons). She said to Jacob, ''Give me children or I shall die!'' He said to her, ''Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?'' CHILDREN STRUGGLED :22 Struggled (NIV jostled) - Heb. to dash together.
