Watchful Care (7 of 14)
Series: God Walks with Us
Stephen Whitney
Genesis 31:1-9
God will use anything to get our attention when we are not listening to him. For Balaam it was a talking donkey, for Jacob it was a change in relationship with his father-in-law.
For us it might be a child who turns away from us, or a friendship that fades, or a marriage that unravels, or being fired from a job. It may be a circumstance that we cannot change. God uses those troubles in our lives to get our attention so he can speak to us.
Our attitude should be that of the young boy Samuel who said, ''Speak Lord, for your servant is listening'' (I Samuel 3:10).
Background 30:31-43 Jacob had served Laban for 14 years for his two daughters, but at the end he was as poor as the day that he arrived. To provide for his growing family to return to Bethel he agreed to shepherd Laban's flocks for 6 more years.
He requested that he would be able to keep all of the streaked, speckled and spotted lambs as his wages for these next 6 years. This agreement was clearly in Laban's favor so he accepted it.
Jacob resorted to ancient magic to outwit Laban so that more and more of the sheep belonged to him. In the mean-time Laban kept changing the terms of their original agreement (31:7,41).
POSITION :1-3 Jacob became aware that the sons of Laban were upset that he had become more successful in breading sheep than their father. They believed that really he had stolen what belonged to their father.
