Fearful Reunion (8 of 14)
Series: God Walks with Us
Stephen Whitney
Genesis 32:3-12
When someone is angry with us, we may try to pacify their anger:
1. Admit you were wrong and ask for their forgiveness.
2. Allow time to go by to heal the wound.
3. Give them what they want to make them feel good.
4. Give them some gift to make them feel special.
Jacob had made his brother Esau angry with him because he had talked him out of his birthright (25:29-33) and stolen his family blessing (27:1-29). Esau wanted to kill him, but Jacob had fled 500 miles north to live with his uncle for the past 20 years.
Now he is headed home to meet his brother and not sure what reaction he will receive so he is afraid. He is right to be afraid because of what he did to his brother 20 years earlier. If we do not repent of our past failures and sins they may cause us trouble in our present lives or sometime in the future.
GIFT OF PEACE :3-5 Edom - was on the east side of the Dead Sea.
:4 Your servant Jacob - language of courtesy and humility. He sends a message to Esau telling him where he has been living for the past 20 years.
:5 He tells him that he has his own wealth now so that he is no longer a threat to try to take his possessions. He is asking that Esau no longer see him as his rival.
My lord - words of respect and humility recognizing Esau was his older brother who he respected.
Favor (KJB grace) - Heb. acceptance or goodwill. Genesis 6:8 Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. It is to find someone to be: agreeable or pleasant. GBN - I am sending you word, sir, in hope of gaining your favor.
FEAR OF REVENGE :6-8 Esau had been tricked by Jacob's cunning and deceit, but now he would let Jacob know that he had the power to humble him.
Esau had indeed become the leader of a nation and he had 400 men with him as a sign of his authority and leadership. Nothing could be more ominous than Esau's silence and his approaching force.
