Genesis 47:28-31
Even though Jacob was a dishonest man, he left a legacy that was far better than he deserved. He walked with God to the end of his life. His legacy is remembered by the fact that 25 times the phrase ''The God of Jacob'' occurs including 9 times in the psalms.
Psalm 20:1 May the Lord answer you, when you are in distress; may the name (character) of the God of Jacob protect you.
The God of Jacob - was the God of the nation of Israel.
Charles Spurgeon - ''The God of Jacob is suggestive; Jacob had his day of trouble, he wrestled, was heard, was defended, and in due time was set on high, and his God is our God still, the same God to all his wrestling Jacobs.''
God wants us to walk faithfully with him to the end of our life. II Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, will award me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all those who have loved his appearing.
Matthew Poole - ''God appointed me a race to run, as a Christian . . . I have now finished it.'' True faith is lived out to the end of our life.
LONG LIFE :28 Jacob had moved to Egypt from Canaan when he was 130 years old (:9) and has lived there for the past 17 years. God had truly been good to give him a long rich and full life.
Abraham had lived to be 175 and Isaac had lived to be 180. God determines how long we will live and the length of our life is different for each person. Today, we consider long life to be 90 or 95 years old. God allowed them to live longer than we do.
PERSONAL REQUEST :29-30 Must die - eventually everyone dies because of our sin. II Samuel 14:14 We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Everyone dies and there is nothing that we can do about it.
