Psalm 23
Good morning. We are taking the summer to walk through the book of Psalms-which is the original song book of Israel. And the unique thing about the Psalms is how well they deal with human emotions. The psalms touch on just about every possible emotion-from anger to disappointment to gratitude to joy-you name it, the Psalms deal with it. And they don't just help us to put words to our emotions; they help us know what to do with them. In our culture, the advice we usually get is to look inward-that's where you'll find the deepest answers. But the Psalms invite us to find something deeper by looking beyond ourselves. And that's why we're calling this series ''Look Up.''
So today we're going to look at the most famous Psalm, and it might actually be the most famous chapter in the entire Bible: the 23rd Psalm. And any time you're looking at something you've seen a million times, you know what the danger is, right? You think, ''I know this. I got this.'' And you sort of mentally tune out. So today I want to invite you to not tune out. And here's why: we might think we know this Psalm, but the evidence of our lives would suggest otherwise. If you look at how we actually live, the only conclusion is that we have no clue what Psalm 23 is talking about.
Because this is a Psalm that's all about stress. Up until about twelve years ago, the number one reason college students would seek counseling was...any guesses? Depression. They felt depressed, so they went and got help. But about twelve years ago, that shifted. Now, the number one reason college students seek counseling is...anxiety. They feel stressed out and under pressure. And the number of students who feel that way keeps rising. And it's not just college students. It comes out in lots of ways: difficulty sleeping; overeating; drinking too much; getting sick a lot; irritability. Some of you are irritated at me, for even bringing this up! And tha ...
