Psalm 72
We're taking the summer to walk through the book of Psalms, which is the original song book of Israel. The Psalms are amazingly good at putting words to our emotions. Whether it's fear-like Pastor Ted talked about last week, or depression-like Pastor John talked about two weeks ago; or happier things like joy or gratitude...the Psalms connect with those emotions. And we're calling the series ''Look Up,'' because even though the Psalms begin with our emotions, they never leave us there; they always call us out of ourselves, upward toward God.
So today, we're going to look at a Psalm that deals with a really interesting emotion. You've probably never thought of this as a human emotion, but I think this is something we all feel. It's the deep longing that we have to be led by someone who is strong and good and truly worth following. I think we all long for that.
Have any of you heard that there's a presidential election coming up next year? I know they haven't mentioned it on the news or social media, but I heard there might be one. Have you seen any of the rallies put on by either President Trump or one of the Democratic contenders? The level of frenzy? Have you followed people's comments on social media? Just a little passion for their candidate. And it's been like that all through history, all across the world: there's something in humans that longs for a leader they can trust and follow. Maybe you say, ''Not me. I'm not interested in politics.'' But this is not just a political thing. People look to the president of their company; the superintendent of their school district; the coach of their team; etc...We want the people who lead us to be strong and good and worth looking up to.
The people of ancient Israel definitely longed for a king worth following. And Psalm 72 is a prayer that the king of Israel would be that kind of leader. It was most likely written by King David, at the end of h ...
