We're taking this summer to walk through the book of Psalms, which is the original song book of Israel. And we've been saying that the Psalms do an amazing job of identifying our emotions and putting them into words. But they don't stop there; they start with our emotions, but then they call us to look up, so we can see things from a bigger perspective.

So...today we're going to look at a Psalm that deals with another universal human emotion. And this is a very personal emotion, and maybe for you it's a very painful one. It's the strong desire that all of us have to be deeply known by someone else. The longing to be known.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, who served as the U.S. Surgeon General a few years ago, said this: ''During my years caring for patients, the most common pathology I saw was not heart disease or diabetes; it was loneliness.'' Just think about that for a minute. As our culture becomes more busy and wealthy and technologically advanced, we are becoming severely disconnected. You might have 5,000 Facebook friends and 9,000 Instagram followers, but still be crushingly lonely, right?

So we have this deep longing to be known, and it's not satisfied by the kinds of surface connections that our culture offers. And that's what Psalm 139 is all about. So let's start by reading the Psalm. Hear the Word of the Lord...

1 You have searched me, Lord,? and you know me.?2 You know when I sit and when I rise;? you perceive my thoughts from afar.?3 You discern my going out and my lying down;? you are familiar with all my ways.?4 Before a word is on my tongue? you, Lord, know it completely.?5 You hem me in behind and before,? and you lay your hand upon me.?6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,? too lofty for me to attain.
