David Platt, the teaching pastor of Mclean Bible Church in Virginia was put in an awkward position last recently when President Donald Trump decided to pay the church a visit. There was very little notice of the president's desire to visit and have the church pray for him. Platt did what I suspect most pastors would, he offered up prayer for the President. Afterward, when he was criticized for praying for him, he responded publicly. Rebuked by some, affirmed by many, Platt found himself in a unique position to speak truth in the President's hearing and his prayer reflected the seriousness of the moment. We are to pray for those in authority and the Lord had David Platt in his position for such a time as this.

When God gets ready to do his work, he looks for a person whose heart is open and willing. God plants within that person a burden, a burden that is bathed in prayer that leads to involvement. Nehemiah was that kind of man. In this passage today, we discover that Nehemiah found favor with the king who sent him out with everything needed to accomplish his God-given task. When God calls you to a work, he will provide everything needed to do his work. There are some key ingredients to doing God's work God's way that are always true, then and now. Read Nehemiah 2:1-9.

The first ingredient to doing God's work God's way is . . .
1. Patience (2:1)
Four months have now passed since the original burden was placed upon Nehemiah, from ''Chislev'' (1:1) to Nisan (2:1). Why 4 months? There are several possible reasons. (1) There could have been several cupbearers in service to the king. No definite article is used here which opens up this possibility. (2) The king could have been absent from Susa for these unaccounted four months. (3) Perhaps Nehemiah was waiting for the New Year or some other special occasion to make his request.
