Nehemiah 8:1-10


Introduction: One of the challenges in the Hurricane Michael recovery effort in the Panama City, Florida area is that there are so few places that people are able to go back to. This was very evident to our team as we worked in the area recently. Rebuilding is taking place, but there is a struggle in getting all the residents back in place.

You might say that Nehemiah faced a similar problem as he took on the insurmountable task of rebuilding Jerusalem after it had been destroyed. The walls of Jerusalem are up, but much needs to be done (see 7:4). Nehemiah recognizes that he will need to identify the persons who are in the city and who might be so he conducts a census of sorts (7:5). ''Revived stones and a restored home are ready for a revived community.'' Everything is coming into place from the physical standpoint of the city. Now, the people must be gathered and revived. The revived community is what we see in Nehemiah Chapter 8.

Life Application: ''The joy of the Lord is experienced as you encounter the Lord through his word in worship.'' All people desire to be joyful but we often look for joy in all the wrong places. If how I feel determines my level of joy, my joy will come and go. But if my joy is in the Lord, my joy will never be shaken. And God's joy will be a source of strength which is what I need.

How did God's people come to experience the joy of the Lord? Although not so much a formula, there were some priorities or key elements that the people had that put them in a position to experience joy.
1. The first priority is a commitment to gather regularly for corporate worship (8:1)
All the people came together (Heb. 10:22-25). Something miraculous happens to our joy level when we gather together with other believers for worship. Your presence, your faith, your participation encourages others.
