Nehemiah 9:1-37

Introduction: Much of what we ''do'' in worship in terms of the elements of worship (prayer, reading and explaining of Scripture) has its roots in the Jewish synagogue. In many ways, the early church patterned their worship after the synagogue. And the development of the synagogue finds its beginnings in Nehemiah 8-9, instituted by Ezra and Nehemiah. The synagogue developed in the exile after the destruction of the temple. Interestingly, the earliest inscription uncovered of such a place was actually in Egypt and it read, ''proseuchyn,'' ''The House of Prayer.''

God's word to Isaiah was, ''my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'' (Isa. 56:7). Then Isaiah elaborated, ''The Sovereign Lord declares - he who gathers the exiles of Israel: 'I will gather still others to them besides those already gathered'' (56:8). God is the 1st missionary! And when Jesus drove out the merchants in the temple because their practices kept people away from God, he quoted Isaiah 56 (Matt. 21:13). God longs for every church to be a house of prayer for all people (a place for people to meet and know God). For that kind of missionary heart and passion to occur, we must be a revived people. And a revived people are a praying people.

Life Application: ''Revival occurs when God's people remember who they are and are fully submitted to His authority as expressed through praise and confession of sin.''

Then the Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated from the fifteenth to the twenty-second (8:14; Lev. 23:34). Now, on the twenty-fourth day (9:1), the people were still sensitive to their ...
