Nehemiah 9:38-10:39
Introduction: The city wall has been restored, people and life are returning to Jerusalem, and the people have renewed their relationship with God. Nehemiah chapter 10 contains many names and archaic details pertaining to Israel; however, it also shows what that community of believers looked like. Here we find some timeless principles that still guide Christ's Church. Why is this important? (1) One, because we need the church of Jesus Christ - the called-out community of faith, imperfect as it is on earth. (2) But more importantly God is bringing his kingdom to earth; that is, he is changing people and he works through his church (his people) to accomplish that. So I find ultimate meaning in life knowing that I am a part of what God is doing to expand his kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
Life Application: ''As a local expression of Christ's Church, we are a covenant community of redeemed believers in Jesus who willingly and joyfully participate together in extending God's kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.''
1. We are a covenant community
Eighty four (84) names are mentioned in an order: leaders, priests, Levites, and laypersons. Read Nehemiah 9:38 (also, 10:1, 8, 9, 14, 28-29). The word ''Covenant'' here means ''making a binding agreement.'' A covenant is an agreement, a pledge, a commitment, a promise. The word ''Covenant'' literally means, ''to cut a covenant.'' The ancient idea of this word goes back to when an animal would be cut in two, placed on altars, and the parties passed between as they made their pledge. The idea here portrayed in graphic form is that ''this is you if you don't make good on your promise'' (ouch!). Today, thankfully if you don't pay your car payment, you only have your car repossessed. Covenant also has the idea of an ''Amen,'' and the idea of constancy, a ''sure covenant'' (KJV).
