Remember Me (11 of 11)

Nehemiah 13:30
Nicko Feinberg found out the hard way what can happen when you rent your home out to people you really don't know. His Air BNB listing was rented by a young couple, seemingly harmless enough, until he found out that over 300 people showed up at his New York house! The couple threw a ''Mansion Party'' where the boys were charged an entrance fee and the girls were allowed in free. Feinberg's home was destroyed, artwork was missing, even the stairs were crashed in - everything was trashed.
Parents have long known what can happen when they leave town and leave the kids in charge. In Nehemiah chapter 13, Nehemiah has left home for a time (13:6) and the kids were left in charge and they have gone wild. What happened? Things were going so well. Now God's people are neglecting worship, ''Why is the house of God neglected'' (13:11), they are ''desecrating the Sabbath,'' (13:18), and they are compromising on their purity, ''Was it not because of marriages like these [marrying foreigners who serve pagan gods] that Solomon king of Israel sinned?'' (13:26). What Nehemiah sees firsthand when he gets back is a total disaster, the people have fallen apart.
It seems like a disappointing way to end the book - the people who made such great promises to God and each other have abandoned God again. And it is in that context that Nehemiah institutes some new reforms (see 13:8, 11, 19, 25, 28). It's obvious, Nehemiah is angry, frustrated, and full of righteous indignation, and he prays three time to be remembered by God (13:14, 22, 30). You get the sense that Nehemiah is saying, ''Remember me . . . please Lord, don't let this moment define me. Do not let this be the measure of my life's work.''
Covenant Breakers, Why We Cannot Keep Our Promises
So why is this messy account included in the Bible of how weak and powerless people are to follow God unless somebody is constantly bearing down on them? It show ...
