Introduction
1. If you are like me and the vast majority of Americans, you believe in God. I want to begin by being very transparent with you this morning and share something that I've actually never said the way I am going to say it, but I feel that I owe it to you to make sure you know it and that is I believe in God. Now, I realize if you are like most Americans you would say, ''So do I.'' Probably like most of you, I've never, ever disbelieved in God, even from the time I was young, but there have been times that I doubted God. Yes, even a pastor has these thoughts go through his mind, ''Is this God-story really true? Is God truly real? Did God create us in his image or did we create God in ours? Is Christianity a fairytale that we only hope is true?''
2. Don't let it surprise you that I have struggled with doubt. If you are struggling with doubt, let me comfort you. Faith presupposes doubt. Some of the greatest men and women in the Bible, at times, doubted. They doubted the reality of God. They doubted the wisdom of God. They doubted the kindness of God
3. To this day when I say two words, most everybody knows who I am talking about - Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa became a saint in the Catholic Church in record time - 6 years after she died. That is how venerated and respected she was by the church. Yet, shortly after beginning her work in the slums of Calcutta, she wrote these words - ''Where is my faith? Even deep down there is nothing but emptiness and darkness. If there be a God - please forgive me.'' Years later, she was still expressing ''such deep-longing for God,'' adding that she felt ''repulsed, empty, no faith, no love, no zeal.''
4. Toward the end of her life she wrote these words, ''What do I labor for? If there be no God, there can be no soul. If there be no soul, then Jesus, you also are ...
