For those of you who may not be aware, today is the most sacred day of the year in professional golf - Sunday at the Masters. Yes, at the end of Magnolia Dr. sits a course that meanders thru the tall Georgia pines, past flowering azaleas/dogwoods, and around Amen Corner that presents its eventual champion w/ the most coveted prize in all of golf - the green jacket. So you can be certain I'll be at home today glued to a TV in anticipation of who will win the coveted Green Jacket.
My love for golf began when I was 8 yrs old. I grew up going to the Atlanta Country Club to watch the PGA Tour when they came thru town b/c my dad was responsible for helping transport the patrons from the parking lot to the course. So while he was working, I was serving as a walking score keeper. One particular yr, I was paired w/ HOF golfer Raymond Floyd for an entire week. After a day or two, he began to engage me and eventually taught me how to hold a club - and I've been hooked on golf ever since.
Today is also the beginning of the most sacred week in our faith, far more important than any sporting event - we begin the journey w/ the Master from the Triumphal entry to the empty tomb. From the Mt. of Olives to Gethsemane thru the Kidron Valley to Mt. Calvary - our Master (Jesus) gave everything to rescue and redeem us so we might have life w/ Him.
W/ a little play on words, I want to begin a series of lessons on the Master to help us learn how to master life. Over the next few weeks, I want to look at five traits we each need if we're going to succeed in life. But for fun, I want to take a golf theme to teach us how to live a birdie life in a bogey world.
In golf, par is the number of strokes it should take to get the ball from the tee into the hole. Thus, a birdie is when you achieve this feat in one less stroke while a bogey is when you take more strokes that believed is needed - so if par is get ...
