If you're just joining us, last week we began a series of lessons on the essential qualities Jesus says every person needs if they're to be successful in life. In particular, last week we spoke about the need for absolute truth b/c truth is the foundation on which we establish our values, beliefs, ambitions, hopes, and convictions. This AM, I want to speak to the 2nd essential quality of success - faith.

Faith is a quality we all exercise in some way every day in the simplest of ways. Daily we put our faith in family/friends, our colleagues/clients - that they're going to come thru and do as they say they will do. We put our faith in our cars that they'll crank and get us from point A to point B - in planes that they'll take off and land - and so on. I share this b/c faith is not an unfamiliar concept to us - that is, until we start to speak about it in regard to placing our trust in God.

By definition - faith is placing one's complete trust or confidence in someone or something that they'll fulfill their promises and accomplish their obligation. Such faith is based on an expectation that the person or object is capable of fulfilling their promise or has proven their trust in the past - meaning faith is neither blind nor unfounded, but based on an unseen certainty.
This is the kind of faith the Bible speaks of from Genesis to Revelation - not some blind chance in the obscure, but a definitive hope based on truth that can be validated. Faith is hope in what is certain even though we might not always be able to see it.

Sometimes I fear we have made faith to be something that it's not. We blindly place our hope in the uncertain instead of what can be validated. We see faith in a way God never intended - and thus faith has become more of an illusion than it is a conviction of the heart.
