One Sunday, a lonely, rich widow w/ very little church experience visited a tiny country church. Unfamiliar w/ how the offering worked, she noticed how people were putting money in the plate - so when the plate came to her, she put $100 in the offering. Since it was a small church, and she was a visitor, everyone was watching when she made her gift. The pastor said, ''We have a guest w/ us today who's made a wonderful offering of $100. B/c of your generosity, I'd like for you to stand and select the first (3) hymns you like.'' Well, the lonely widow stood up, looked around the room, and said, ''I choose him, him, and him.''

Three weeks ago, we started a series on the essential qualities Jesus says every person needs if they're to be successful in life. The first two qualities we've discussed have been truth/faith - today we're going to look at the quality of generosity.

Truth is there's no other quality in life that so identifies genuine faith and testifies of a person's allegiance and followship like generosity. Simply stated, we're never more like God than when we're giving generously. Consider Jesus' words in John 3:16...

For God so loved the world, He gave his only Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Jn. 3:16

generosity - the attitude, ability and activity of giving, whether from one's abundance or poverty, w/ liberality and w/ out any concern for self.

At its core, generosity isn't an event but a lifestyle - it's a conviction that flows from an understanding that all we have, who we are, and ever hope to become is not ours to possess but to share/invest for God's glory.
