On May 27, 1943, Louis Zamperini and his crew went down over the Pacific. For 47 days, they were stranded at sea in a raft drifting over 2000 miles before being picked up by the Japanese and thrown into a prison camp known as Execution Island. The treatment he faced was unimaginable as one guard sought to break him by giving him daily beatings. On one occasion, Z was forced to hold a 6 ft. beam on his shoulders knowing if he dropped it, he was going to be shot. At first, the guard mocked him, until he realized the punishment had become a defining moment of defiance as Z held the beam above his head for 37 min. Angered by the moment, the guard would beat him; but it was too late, as Z's unbowed influence inspired the other POW's to live unbowed to their enemy.

The will of the human spirit is amazing to watch, but when it is coupled w/ a heart of conviction it becomes an unstoppable force. This was no more prevalent than in the story of (4) Jewish teens swept away from their homeland and carted off to Babylon in Daniel.

Today, I want to begin a timely series on how to stand strong in a fallen world - how to stand for truth when everyone else is falling for lies - how to live UNBOWED before the Lord.

unbowed - not submitted to pressure/demands
Don't be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you'll be able to test/approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing, and perfect will. Romans 12:2

Don't lived stuffed in the mold of the world - forced into the same cultural patterns as those who don't know Christ - lived unbowed, unbroken to the world and unmistakably for God.

This is the sentiment here in Daniel 1. Instead of blending in, Daniel and his friends chose to STAND TRUE! And in a world groping in darkness, if we're going to have any impact on our culture, we're going to have to learn how to stand true in the right way, at ...
