Why I Believe in the Eternal Security of the Believer

Do you know the name Fanny Crosby? She was a blind woman who discovered that insight often times is better than sight!

Back in 1873, Fanny Crosby's friend, Phoebe Knapp, composed a melody and played it over to her two or three times on the piano. She then asked what it said. She said:

''Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!

O What a foretaste of glory divine!

Heir of salvation, purchase of God,

Born of His spirit, washed in His blood.''

And how we've enjoyed singing that great ole hymn since it first appeared in print in 1873:

''Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!''

Now it's one thing to sing it; it's another thing to have it! Do you have that blessed assurance? Do you have a know-so salvation or a hope-so salvation? You say, ''Ernest, it depends on the day! Some days I have a know-so salvation and other days I have a hope-so salvation. Some days I'm just trying to hold on and to hold out and the longer I try the more doubtful I become.''

Let me tell you that God never intended for his children to ever wonder if they're his or not. He never intended for us to wonder or question or doubt we really belong to him or not. He wants us to KNOW that we KNOW that we KNOW that we are children of God. There's nothing like living the doubt-free life!

You say, ''Ernest, are you sure?'' Oh, I'm sure and let me tell you why: the Bible tells me so!

We hear John saying in 1 John 5.13, 'I have written these things (the seven sign miracles of Jesus) to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.''

This word ''know'' comes from the root word (oida) that speaks of having knowledge of or to perceive something. In other words, there is something that God wants his children to have knowledge of, to be certain of or to perceive and that something is eternal life!
