Proverbs 5-7
Open your bibles to Proverbs 5. We're spending the summer in the Proverbs, learning how to live wisely in some of the most important and relevant aspects of life. Wisdom is a gift of God to practically apply what we know to consistently live how we should. God wants us and enables us to live wisely in every aspect of our lives. But even as believers, we can choose to live wisely or unwisely. That includes today's subject of life a life of purity. Specifically, sexual purity.
There may not be two words put together in the English language right now that are considered more un-cool or more unrealistic than those two words: sexual purity. Some deem it unnecessary. Others declare it impossible. All of us know it's unpopular. And yet, sexual purity isn't just suggested by our Creator, it is commanded. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 says: ''It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.''
Sometimes God's Word and God's will seem cloudy or confusing. But this is not one of them. God's will for every one of His children is that they be sanctified. When we believe by faith Jesus died a substitutionary death in our place for our sin, we are justified. That means Christ was declared guilty for our sin, we've been declared innocent. While our sin was placed on Him, His righteousness is imputed into us. In a sense, we've switched places. God treated Jesus on the cross as if He'd lived our sinful life, so that He could treat us as if we lived His righteous life. That's the amazing, wonderful good news of the Gospel of Jesus.
But while our ultimate penalty for sin has been dealt with by Christ's death on the cross and resurrection from the grave, our daily battle to obey the will of God and not live how our flesh wants to is still a work in progress, amen?
