If you have your Bibles with you now this evening, if you would be finding your place at Genesis, chapter number 26. We are now officially at, after what, nearly two years; we have hit the halfway mark. We're in Genesis, chapter 26 tonight, and if you're new here at Abilene, two years this fall, but a year and a half, we have been journeying through this initial book, the beginning book in your Bible. We've called this series of studies ''The Book of Beginnings: Creation, Fall, Flood, and Covenant.'' Tonight, we come to Genesis 26, beginning in verse number one, all the way down through the end of the chapter. We are going to get done here tonight with Genesis 26, and then we're going to move on, because next week, we're in Genesis, chapter number 27. That's how this works.

As you're finding your way there to Genesis 26 and verse one, let me give you just the Whitt's notes version, and then we're going to begin to read and work our way through this chapter together this evening. This really is a unique chapter in your Bible, because it really is the only chapter that is uniquely and completely devoted to this man by the name of Isaac. As you come to Genesis 26 and verse number one, there is a very familiar problem taking place. There's another famine that has occurred, that plagues the land. As you come here, Isaac has to make a decision. He turns to God. He refers to a man, a Philistine, by the name of Abimelech. As he works his way through this chapter, you're going to see that the situation, the circumstances were beginning to control him.

In the first verses of this chapter, you get the idea. It seems obvious that he was planning to run down to Egypt just like his daddy, Abraham had done some 100 years before. But he stops in a place called Gerar, and the Lord appears to him there. God warns him, God says, ''Hey, don't you go down to wicked Egypt, but rat ...
