Mark 12:13-17
How many of you have ever heard there are two things you don't talk about... if you want friends... if you want to stay friends... you don't talk about religion and you don't talk about politics. So maybe today I will lose my friends. I hope not. There are hardly more controversial topics today than Jesus and politics. - I've always found politics interesting. I enjoy watching presidential debates and all that goes into it. The governing process in our nation is quite amazing. - But we live in a time where people have very passionate views on political issues and governing issues. Many speak with hostility about those that do not agree with their political persuasion. - For this reason many people would say just avoid the subject altogether. Don't talk about controversial things. Here is the thing... the Bible addresses our relationship to the government. Jesus even deal with it here in Mark. If you are a believer your relationship with Christ is to effect EVERYTHING about you. Your relationship with Christ should shape your view of EVERYTHING including your response to government and politics. You are not a citizen who happens to be a Christian, you are a Christian who happens to be a citizen of this nation. So your faith in Christ and obedience to His Word should effect you relationship to the government and politics.
So how should Christians live in relationship with the government, particularly in our context? Are we to be political revolutionaries? Are to be politically apathetic? In our text today we have a group of people trying to draw Jesus into a politically charged issue in order to discredit and damage him... let's see what Jesus has to say about politics...
