Jesus and Power (18 of 28)
Series: The Gospel of Mark: The True Story of the Son of God
Josh Malone
Mark 10:32-52
Here's the thing. Honor/prominence and power/influence are two of the big idols of our day. Like money it can drive: education, extra hours, how you spend your free time. In fact I'd be willing to bet there are people in the room this morning who are disappointed with their lives. You don't have all you wanted. You don't feel as important as you wish. You think, if I had power... I could get honor... and then I'd be happy and fulfilled. That's idolatry. Power, honor, ambition, greatness... these things are not wrong. But we can pursue them wrongly, we can use them wrongly, and we can take good things and make them an idol. Why do we do this with ambition, power, honor and the like... we want GLORY.
But get this... you do have power/influence... everyone has SOME. At the very least you have some influence over your own life, your family, etc. Some people no doubt have more than others. But we all have it. Nobody that has ever walked this earth has known more powerful influence, authority, and also honor... than King Jesus. In today's text we see proud disciples lusting for honor, power, influence and see a desperate blind beggar just reaching out for mercy and we see the humble hearted King of Kings. Today we will learn what makes people lust for honor, prestige, and power, how it can be abused, how it should be used... but we will also see how Jesus used His.
