TIME magazine published its most controversial cover on April 8, 1966. In bold red letters they asked, ''Is God Dead?'' TIME informed their readers that the headline represented, ''... a summons to reflect on the meaning of existence.''
That article was written by John T. Elson, the religion editor, and he captured the nation's shifting theological mood. The 50s had been a decade of complacent faith following the triumph over Nazi Germany in World War 2. The 60s, however, ushered in a decade of rebellion.
That cover became an icon of social and religious transformation. John Lennon suggested that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ, and Timothy Leary challenged college students everywhere to, ''...tune in ... turn on ... and drop out.''
And they did in droves! At about the same time Madalyn Murray O'Hair founded the American Atheists. She attacked the practice of public prayer in schools; she described religion as ''... a crutch...'' and she led the charge to separate church and state. As a result, God was declared dead!
I preached my first sermon at the age of fourteen in Zimbabwe, Africa - but I began preaching regularly in 1973. That's 46 years, and I've decided that it's time to retire from full time ministry.
I met with our elders on Tuesday to discuss my retirement and I asked to preach five more sermons. I don't want to hang it up without you knowing exactly what I believe and why.
Today's world doesn't seem to know what to believe anymore! The world doesn't believe in the God of the Bible, or hold to any convictions about moral absolutes, or believe in life after death, or see the church as relevant. So, before I close out this chapter of life, I'd like to state my convictions plainly.
