Theme: Becoming a follower of Jesus is a new birth and is about changing your whole identity and becoming an entirely new person. Peter explains in chapter 2 that this new birth and new identity are so profound that you are called to a new citizenship. It calls you up out of any earthly kingdom into an eternal heavenly kingdom.

A few weeks ago, I went away for a few days to begin thinking about sermons for 2020, what I would preach in 2020. As I was preparing to go, I was having a conversation with Brad Smith, and he said, ''You know, it would be good for you to help the church think about politics from a Biblical perspective.'' I told him that I was actually preaching two sermons to that end in July, and he said, ''Oh, that will be good. That's right around the time of the DNC and the RNC,'' and then I said, ''No, I am not planning those for 2020. I am planning those for this July.''

So, we are way ahead of the curve here, but as you know, the first of the Democratic debates were last week, and political talk will of course be ramping up over the next few months, and as it does, I want us to be a church that knows how to engage with the culture when it comes to political things in a way that really honors the Lord and in a way that is true to the way of Christ.

See, a lot of Christians have the tendency to over-spiritualize political things. Someone sent me an article last week about Paula White using Psalm 2 to speak about Donald Trump as the Lord's anointed, and let me just tell you, Psalm 2 is about many things, but it is not about Donald Trump or any US President.
