James 3:13-18
Conflict is a part of every era of human history. Our Congress and President Bush currently disagree as to how to approach winning the conflict in Iraq. And our world seems to becoming consumed with conflict on every front. Yet one of the conflicts that we are inevitably going to face in our lives is Civil War. That is the war that we fight with one another. It's a war within our family ... or within our marriage ... or among our friends.... The collateral damage of a civil war is tremendous.
Civil war has very little civility about it. Civil War is where character assassinations take place. It is where we talk about other people behind their backs - those covert, backstabbing, betraying operations. Everyone gets damaged in this conflict, including our friends, our careers, and our family. The conflict many of us are going through is quite deceiving on the surface. For on the surface we often look content or tranquil... but it is on the inside we lack the ''togetherness'' that others see from the outside. Frequently, we struggle with how we are going to get through tomorrow. The real tune of our heart cries for help. We all desire harmonious relationships, and yet many Christian churches and homes are marked by frequent conflict. The answer James tells us is our need for wisdom.

''Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial ...
