The Word of the Lord
This story, if you really listen to it and take it seriously, is truly one of if not the most interesting, frustrating, and fascinating stories in the Bible. It's a story that if you really want to understand God and his character, and if you really want to understand Christianity, you need this story.
If you have been with us, you know that we are looking at Genesis in 3 ''Acts'' this year. We looked at the First Act in February, and that took us from creation through the fall of mankind to the end of Genesis 11 where all kind of seems lost. But then in this Act, light breaks in. You could call this act of Genesis ''A New Hope'' because just when all seems lost, just when it seems that all is lost and even Abram and his family are living among the Chaldeans worshipping other gods, worshipping the moon, God calls Abram, and he says something amazing to him. He says Abram go from your homeland, and I am going to make you great. I am going to make you a great nation Abram, and I will bless you, and every family on earth will be blessed through you.
Abram obeys. He leaves his homeland, and you think from that point on that Abram does great things for the Lord, and everything is great. I mean, after all, God is with Abram, and so it's all going to be great, but then of course, that is not how the story goes. In fact, that's not how the story goes at all. This whole story has been categorized by ups and downs and rights and wrongs. One minute Abram is obeying God faithfully, and the next minute he is dishonoring his wife in a shameful way by giving his wife over to Pharaoh and saying she was his sister.
