Put on Your Life Preserver
Jeff Ginn
Isaiah 43:1-2, 21
Storms will come into our lives. On occasion they come in the form of natural disasters. But they need not defeat us. This was a message delivered in the face of Hurricane Barry, but it is applicable in the unique storms or disasters that you may face.
If we're a little gun-shy about storms down here in South Louisiana, you can hardly blame us for that. There's been a long string of serious storms that have come through South Louisiana. Let me just name some: Allison. Katrina. Rita. Gustav. Isaac. And Barry. I've only mentioned the names of a few storms. Amazingly, all these have struck our region within the last 20 years. So, South Louisiana is used to being hit by storms.
Of course, the one that was the most painful for many of us locally was a storm that hit in 2016. Ironically, that storm doesn't even have a name. Here, we just call it ''The great flood.'' The ''great flood of 2016.'' We count about 400 of the families in our own local church that were devastated by that flood. Their homes were flooded, or their businesses. My wife and I had our home flooded. We also lost three automobiles. I know that what we lost pales in comparison to what a lot of you lost, and so we're used to storms, Whenever warnings come out about storms, we take them seriously. In fact, I would say that life has changed for us since 2016.
When they started talking about Hurricane Barry this week, we got busy preparing. We began to move some of our things up to the second floor. We actually went to an emergency station and filled up sandbags. We brought them back and we sandbagged our front door and the garage, the only entry points to the apartment where we're living now, and so, as you can see, we took it seriously.
Life has changed around our house because of the storms we've faced. In fact, I'll show you the best evidence of it. This is my wife's life preserver, and she carries this in her car always. It's ...
