2 Samuel 15:7-14

Hachi-ko was an Akita dog that is remembered for his loyalty. He was born in 1923 on a farm in a small Japanese village, and seven weeks later a college professor became Hachi-ko's master. Every morning Professor Hidesaburo Ueno commuted to Tokyo; and every evening Hachi-ko met his master at the Shibuya train station.

That pattern continued for the next eighteen months. One day, however, Professor Ueno died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the university. That night Hachi-ko waited for his master to return - and he waited until his death.

Hachi-ko means, ''Faithful dog.'' For nine years, nine months, and fifteen days Hachi-ko waited for his master to return. Each evening, at precisely the time the train was scheduled to arrive, Hachi-ko made his appearance.

An article appeared in the Asahi Shimbun paper on October 4, 1932. The author told his story and humanized that lovable dog. It seemed as if the whole country was moved by a dog they'd never met! They came to visit, stroke his head, speak softly, and the children of Japan openly embraced Hachi-ko.

That continued until Hachi-ko's death on March 8, 1935. Then, a well-known artist rendered a sculpture, and that sculpture is now a statue that can be found at the Shibuya train station to remind the world of Hachi-ko's loyalty to his owner.

he station entrance near his statue is named Hachi-ko guchi: ''The entrance and exit of Hachi-ko.'' In 2009, Richard Gere produced and starred in a movie about Hachi-ko titled, ''Hachi: A Dog's Tale.''

Every March 8, on the anniversary of Hachi-ko's death, a ceremony takes place at the Shibuya railroad station. Thousands of dog lovers assemble to honor Hachi-ko's memory and loyalty. The highlight of the ceremony is when a recording is played of Hachi-ko's bark.
