At the start of my seminary journey I enrolled at an extension center for New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. I would drive over to Graceville, Fl where the classes were held and would be in class one day a week, on Mondays, for 6-8 hours and would drive home late Monday evening.

Part of doing extension work required that I be on campus at the seminary in New Orleans a couple times a year. That first trip to New Orleans was long and adventuresome. It was before the days of GPS and smart phones. You got an address, a couple of maps and some directions and headed, which as a single driver in a large and strange place was no easy task. (Talk about distracted driving, try reading a map while driving. Sheesh).

When I hit New Orleans, I may have missed the exit and got turned around a little. For those who don't know, the seminary is not in the best and safest part of town. So, to get off course put in an even worse part of town. In may attempt to get back on course, I turned down one street, it was the wrong street, and found police cars, lights flashing, lining the road with several men handcuffed and bent over the hoods.

Not what a small-town boy who was just a little bit lost wanted to see. In that moment I thought, ''What have I gotten myself into? How did I get here?''

Has anybody else ever had a similar traveling experience? What about in life? Have you ever found yourself in a place you never dreamed you'd be, one where you looked at your current situation and asked, ''How did I get here? What am I doing here?''

-Maybe it was because of poor choices, yours or someone else's.

-Maybe it was a place of financial struggle/difficulty because of bad money management, loss of a job or collapse of an economy.

-Maybe it was because the seeds of your own sin and disobedience sprouted and bore some rotten and sour fruit.

-Maybe it was because you did the right thing, but the result ...
