Choosing the Right Road
Robert Dawson
Psalm 1
The Psalms, unlike any other book, leads to this amazing view of God and insight into His relationship with us. These songs, poems, proclaim the greatness of God. They tell of His grace. They point to His transcendence but also to His closeness. We see it in the psalms of praise, the pleas for help, the cries for justice, the prayers for forgiveness and the different expressions of anguish, frustration and disappointment. People love the Psalms because they run the gamut of our feelings about life and God. They are passionate, honest in their expression of human emotion, and even convicting. They tell us how to live a blessed life. They may not give a step by step instructional guide to a blessed life, but they show us the way because these psalms, whether cries for help, admissions of fear, confessions of sin or out and out praise are all oriented Godward. A blessed life is a Godward life.
Whether or not we live a blessed life will be determined by the direction we choose to travel, the orientation of our life. We need to choose wisely.
There is an epitaph on a tombstone that reads, ''Pause my friend as you walk by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now so you will be. Prepare my friend to follow me.'' To that script someone added this line, ''To follow you is not my intent until I know which way you went.''
There is only one road to blessed. This is a truth we find in the opening Psalm which serves as an introduction to the entire Psalter. A blessed life, a happy life, cannot be found just anywhere. It can only be found God. We will only experience the blessed life when we live a Godward life.
Let's start by reading this psalm together.
Psalm 1.1-6 - How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
?2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law, he meditates day and night. 3 He will be lik ...
