Our scripture reading for today Genesis 1:1-32, 2:3
In 2004, I got on a plane here in Atlanta and flew to Guangzhou China, and then I got on another plane and flew to Kunming, and then I got on a bus and drove for like 7 hours to another Chinese town Dali. In Dali, we had 2 days of training where we learned some basic Mandarin and a little bit about the area, and then my friend Barrett and I, both 22 years old, went out in a car from Dali as far as we could take a car. Then we started hiking into the mountains. It was the farthest I had ever been away from home up to that point and even to today.
We went out in these super remote areas to these super remote villages that you could only access by foot to go and collect demographic information about some remote people in the mountains to the west of Dali near the Burmese border. So, we spent a little over a month hiking through the Himalayan mountains looking for this one particular people group, the Lalowa people. Now we didn't know enough Mandarin to evangelize the Lalowa people, but our job was just to find them, gather information, and mark them on the map...where these people were and which villages these people were in. The IMB was going to take that information and give it to missionaries that were working with that particular people group. It was an amazing month of my life, and what amazed us were the people we were able to meet and engage with. We didn't know a lot of Mandarin, and I have forgotten most of it, but I remember, ''Woman Chu Pashan, Can Can, Wany Wan, Shwabien'' which means we are hiking, looking around, having fun, whatever. Whenever people would ask what we are doing we would say that.
We would meet these people, and we would play a lot of Majan with them late into the night. At one point, while staying for a few days in this little town called Jigai, my buddy Barrett got sick while we were there, so I would ...
