Our scripture reading for today comes from Genesis 4:1-16
The Word of the Lord
If you were here last week, I said that in order to understand the Bible and really to understand all of life, you need to understand the book of Genesis. Now the word ''Genesis'' means generation, as in to generate something, to begin or create something. It has the same root as the word ''gene''. It's the genes of all of life. It's the DNA of the world. So, everything in the book is just packed. In fact, it's kind of a hard book to preach because there is so much in every chapter, really in every sentence.
I was telling someone this week that even if you didn't believe that the Bible was inspired and authoritative as we do, you would still have to be amazed by its literary value, and Genesis is one of those places where the literature is on full display but not just the literature but also the theology and the instruction. So, these past two weeks, I have been giving 5 point sermons, and this week started out as a 7-point sermon, but I have been going long and feeling rushed so for your sake and mine, I whittled it down to four. Four things that this passage wants to teach us:

When I first conceived of this sermon series, I called this sermon ''Death'', and I guess it's still called ''Death''. It's the first case of death that we read about in scripture, and for all we know according to scripture, this is the first death, but it's really also the first story that we have of life. It's the first story that we have of life in a fallen world, and it's the first story that we have of life outside of the Garden.
