Our Scripture Reading for Today Comes From Genesis 6:9-22

This is God's Word.

This is one of the first Bible stories that I remember learning about and being fascinated by as a kid, and it makes sense, right? It involves a lot of things that kids are into, e.g., boats, animals, and this rainbow sign from God in the end. It's easy to hear this story as a child, as it gets framed in your head in a certain way, and because of that, it's hard to step back and really think about what is going on this story. This is a story about great judgement. this is a story about the greatest tragedy ever. In this flood, not only does everyone die, this is a story where all of creation dies. This is a story where something amazing happens, and it's hard to believe that there is this global flood that in the midst of it, God saves humanity and saves all animal life on this boat. I would argue that you have to understand what is going on this story in order to understand what is going on in all of life. It is a foundational story; it is a Genesis story.

If you have been with us over the past few weeks, we have been studying the book of Genesis, and we have been saying if you don't understand what is going on in the book of Genesis and what begins in Genesis, then you can't understand the rest of the Bible, and really you can't understand all of life. So, I am really glad that you are here today. We are going to be in the book of Genesis for a total of 12 weeks in 2019, but this is our last installment for now. You could say we are looking at Genesis in 3 acts, and this is Act 1 Scene 4, and we are about to have an intermission.

What we have seen in Act 1 is that the world has gone from a perfect creation and one totally in line with God, to a fallen world with chaos and sin, and if you read on, beyond the flood narrative, even this flood, doesn't cure that but is instructive to us. So, 3 lessons I ...
