Being Forgiving
Stephen Whitney
Psalm 130
Sin always leaves consequences in our lives and sometimes it is guilt about not feeling forgiven. In a survey of 50,000 people more than 40% indicated they were often troubled by feelings of guilt.
1. We feel partially forgiven of our sins, but not completely forgiven because we cannot forgive ourselves.
2. We feel partially forgiven, but not completely forgiven because other people have not forgiven us.
Psalm 130 is one of 7 penitential psalms or psalms of confession which express sorrow for sin. The most famous is psalm 51 where David confesses his sorrow for the sin of adultery and murder.
Martin Luther called Psalm 130 a 'Pauline Psalm' because it focuses on God's free mercy towards us and forgiveness of our sins which only comes by God's grace and not anything we do.
CRY FOR MERCY :1-2 Depths - Heb. literally deep water in which you would drown. Here it refers to some difficult situation that overwhelmed him so he felt helpless to save himself. As a result, he called out to God. We don't know what he was going through, but he recognized that he was in some deep trouble.
:2 He pleads with God to hear his prayer because he needs God's mercy to rescue him from whatever situation he finds himself in.
Pleas for mercy (KJB supplication) - Heb. request for favor. He knows that he is not able to save himself from his situation. True faith is completely trusting God because you recognize that cannot help yourself. That often happens in a crisis in our lives.
Coming to God with one problem can expose the real problem which is our sin against God which needs to be forgiven.
FORGIVENESS IS OFFERED :3-4 Record kept :3 Mark (NIV kept a record) - Heb. to keep, observe or preserve. Genesis 37:11 Jacob kept in his mind Joseph's dreams. The reason something would be written down so that you would be able to look at it sometime in the future. It is a memory devise.
