Introduction

Over the last eleven messages we've been exploring great depth the Law of God as given to Israel at Mount Sinai. We've been doing so because we've seen that the Law reveals to us both who God is as well as who He redeems us to be. The Law was given not to restrict God's people or to temper their enjoyment of life, but the exact opposite: to free the people to the fullness and abundance of life they had been created for! Hopefully, then, that's what we've all come to see over these last eleven messages, of how the Law really does free us to true life.

But as we jump back into the narrative of the book of the Exodus this morning, we see God's revelation of Himself continue. In other words, the Law is not the extent of God making Himself known. Instead, just as He revealed Himself through the exodus itself, then through the Law, we now see Him do so through the establishment of the Tabernacle. And really it follows a logical progression. First, God shows who He is through the exodus. Second, God speaks who He is through the Law. And now, third, God will preside with His people through the Tabernacle.

You see, this is true of every relationship. Just knowing about someone isn't enough. You must be with someone to truly know them and be known by them. And that's what God desires. God desires to be with us and for us to be with Him. He demonstrated this at the very beginning of time with the Garden of Eden. God creates a special place in which He may dwell among His creation and be with His people. Sin, however, forced humanity from that place and while God made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to bless them, He never did dwell with them.

Thus, God establishes in Exodus 25 and following the Tabernacle to be the place where He may dwell among His people. But the Tabernacle doesn't just teach us of God's desire to be known, it itself makes God known. In ...
