I don't know of anything that brings more grief to the human heart than death. There are a lot of things that disturb us but death is in a whole different category. There is a sense of hopelessness about death and it's this hopelessness that causes us to despair for our friends and loved ones and even ourselves. Until Jesus there was no cure for death; it was not something anyone ever came back from. Each of us still owes God a death (Heb. 9:27) but because of the Savior we can see death, our final enemy, in a whole new light.

Even though a man was restored to life in these verses he's not the main focus of this passage. It was the despair of a grieving mother that touched the heart of the Savior and led to this incredible miracle. Think of her situation. Her son had died and while that was bad enough it only gets worse. In Jesus' day if a woman's husband died the eldest son assumed the responsibility of caring for his mother. In this case he was also dead. Not only was this mother grieving she was also destitute. Who wouldn't despair in the face of all this?

Put yourself in her place. What we discover from this text is that God had a miraculous answer for her despair and will for ours as well.

11 Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd.
12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her.
13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, ''Do not weep.''
14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, ''Young man, I say to you, arise.''
15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.
16 Then fear came upon all, and they glorified G ...
