A Miracle of Purpose (12 of 16)
Series: The Miracles of Luke
Richard Bradley
Luke 5:17-26
Why think about miracles that occurred over 2,000 years ago? Studying the miracles of Luke's gospel will do at least three things for us. It will give us a clear picture of what God is thinking and how He feels. But more importantly we'll discover what He's capable of doing. It's interesting to know what God is thinking and how He feels but when we find ourselves in a world of hurt we want to know, ''What can God do for me?''
Can God still do the things He demonstrated through Jesus' life and ministry? Yes! After all, He's the unchanging God of all power and authority. In fact, Jesus communicated this very message in Revelation 1:8:
8 ''I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,'' says the Lord, ''who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.''
NKJV
We know God doesn't always engage in the miraculous but sometimes He does. The point is, He's always capable of doing what we cannot do for ourselves. Sometimes Jesus healed people because they needed healing. However, occasionally, He healed someone to teach an object lesson or a greater truth as in today's passage.
Luke 5:17-26
17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him.
19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus.
20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, ''Man, your sins are forgiven you.''
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, ''Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?''
