Series: The Miracles of Luke

Luke 9:37-42
Jesus had just come down from the Mount of Transfiguration with Peter, James, and John. Nine disciples had been left in the valley with people milling about everywhere waiting Jesus' return. It was there that the nine encountered a father whose son was demon possessed. He asked them to cast the demon out. This should have been easy since Jesus had previously given them the power to do so. But, they could not! In His absence the disciples could not act decisively with power and God's authority.
There must have been a reason for this failure and there was. Too often we fall in with the nine when push comes to shove and we're expected to act during a moment of trial. There is a price to be paid for success in the Christian life. Some are willing to pay this price and some are not. Remember, nothing worth having is ever going to be free.
What's that price? In a word, it's submission. Jesus could cast the demon out because He was living close enough to God to make it possible.
Luke 9:37-42
37 Now it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met Him.
38 Suddenly a man from the multitude cried out, saying, ''Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, for he is my only child.
39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out; it convulses him so that he foams at the mouth; and it departs from him with great difficulty, bruising him.
40 So I implored Your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.''
41 Then Jesus answered and said, ''O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.''
42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. Then Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the child, and gave him back to his father.
