1 Samuel 18:1-4
We are opening a series on relationships this morning. There are a lot of things to navigate in life. Your education, future vocation, job changes and other challenges, weather!
''When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want? Will you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be people. If relationships will matter most then, shouldn't they matter most now?'' (Max Lucado)
Relationships can be the most fulfilling, the most difficult, and sometimes all at the same time! And tricky to navigate as well.
We were created to live in community, created to live in relationship with God and our neighbor.
Genesis 2:18 (ESV)
18Then the Lord God said, ''It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.''
The first thing that God called ''not good'' was for man to be alone.
Genesis records that God spoke and said, ''Let Us make man in Our image''. We see that God has never been alone even unto Himself!,
In relationships we are shaped, in both good and bad ways.
We can be motivated by relationships.
Deeply wounded by relationships.?
Defined by relationships.?
Influenced by relationships.
We are also judged and assessed by others because of our relationships
(Jesus was called a friend of sinners because He ate with tax collectors and sinners)
''can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em''
Yet because God has breathed life and relationship in us, we can't live without them even if we think we can.
Castaway was a movie with Tom Hanks. He was stranded alone on an island. Finally out of desperation for companionship, he drew a face on a volleyball and name it Wilson.
Relationships can be like a sea that is calm one ...
